La tempesta sul lago
"This Oratorio is the first in a series which Domenico Bartolucci composed in the early years of his career. Composed in 1935, it was revised by the author in 1968 for the Sagra Musicale Lucchese. Bartolucci chooses the Gospel narrative of the calming of the waters on Lake Tiberiade as the setting to the Oratorio in which he tackles the difficult theme of faith. Although provided with the limited colours and nuances that the art of music can offer to a composer, the result of this choral-symphonic fresco is no less telling and no less poignant than that offered by traditional iconography. The Oratorio is divided in two parts depicting the two different states of mind that a believer goes through during his religious experience: certitude and doubt, tranquillity and agitation. Faith is received as a gift and it produces in the believer a sense cf calmness (serene weather, clear waters, easy sailing), a feeling depicted by the soft, sweet melody intoned by the choir in the first moments of the Oratorio: "Maria et flumina". But when doubts rise, faith becomes difficult to conserve (howling winds, troubled waters, raging storm, the boat tossed by the waves) and it may even grow so weak that the disciples feel the need to cry out in disperation, "Domine, salva nos: perimus!" but Jesus is always present and forthwith comes to the aid of his disciples, "Et imperavit mari: Tace! Obmutesce!". The astonishment of the disciples leads to 'catharsis' and repentance and to the final profession of faith: "Vere Filius Dei est!". These two moments, so densely rich of meaning and symbolism, are fixed on the score by Bartolucci in a marvellous way. The Oratorio plunges 'in medias res' with an orchestral introduction which underlines the musical unity that gives rise both tothe serene atmosphere in the first part and to the dramatic moments in the second..."
